I just watched a powerful movie – Lemoade – The Movie.
It’s one of those documentaries where there’s no voiceover- just people talking about their experience. They’re not all young and they’re living examples of how to deal with a layoff or indeed any crisis.
Two quotes:
“Don’t be the person out there looking for a job; be the person doing something interesting.”
“It’s not a pink slip; it’s a blank page.”
This philosophy actually fits into ideas from many different places. We’re hearing more and more that a layoff is a signal and an opportunity to try new things. And I believe there is evidence that people who do take these kinds of steps end up with more opportunities than those who frantically keep looking for a new position.
The folks in this film turned to themselves. They mostly started their own new businesses. They had always been achievers for someone else; now they began turning the spotlight on themselves.
My favorites:
“I got laid off and I changed my gender.”
and
“I still find time to volunteer and give to others even though looking for a job is full-time job.”
Go watch it now – it’s free and you won’t forget it.
