Do you need a career coach for your mid-life career transition? And if so, how do you choose?
(1) Myth: Everyone needs a coach.
Reality: Most people do not need a coach. You will benefit from a coach when you
— feel isolated and don’t have a sounding board or confidante.
— feel confused about what you’ve been reading
— can’t seem to get going on your career change
— face a tough decison
(2) Myth: Career coaching should be free.
Reality: You can get free coaching from college placement offices, some state agencies and some agencies or networking groups. Private coaches, counselors and consultants will expect payment.
You can get free info from email messages and website but you will also get “commercials” for services! It goes with the territory.
(3) Myth: Career coaching costs thousands of dollars.
Reality: The going rate is $50 – $500 an hour. I don’t recommend paying huge sums up front.
