Whether you’re considering a new job or just want to stay marketable, I would recommend taking a look at Dan Schawbel’s boook, Me 2.0. Check it out here.
The old way to change jobs and advance your career doesn’t work anymore. I like Schawbel’s ideas. Make a video. Post to a blog. Get known for something.
Schawbel’s ideas for live networking may be harder to implement. When you seek to get more involved in an organization, you can be shuffled off to a committee that doesn’t give you a chance to interact with the members. I’d also be careful about choosing organizations for networking. Some groups just feature a lot of people who are chasing each other’s tail. They’re all eager to network but everybody’s taking and nobody’s giving.
I also think your blog can do well with a simple, low-cost theme. Logos are optional.
Check the book out, either buying or borrowing from your library. I bet there’s at least one idea you can use immediately.
