My Clients

Are you my kind of client?

Most of my clients call when they’re facing a major career crisis. Just as they’d call the Auto Club when they get a flat tire, they call me when their career stops moving.

For example, they have 2 attractive offers and both want an answer– yesterday. Or they’ve just been laid off and need a 30-day game plan. Or they’re responding to a scary performance review.  Or they just had a “last straw” experience and want a sounding board before they do anything drastic.

  • About one-half of my clients call because they have a challenge combining relocation and career.
  • Clients also call me when a job search stalls. Some seek resume and interview consultation. Others need to analyze what went wrong and revise their strategy.
  • And some call when they want “something more.” They’re doing well but feeling pressure — internal or external — to change. They want more freedom, more leisure and often more meaning in their work.

My clients have five to twenty-five years of solid professional work experience. They’re managers, executives, professionals or business owners.  Many have graduate degrees and/or have won awards in their fields.

My clients bring scenarios like these:

  • “My job will go away in six months — after twenty years with the same company. I’ll get some severance but I need another job. And there’s not much available at my level.”
  • “I’ve been offered a terrific job — but I’d have to relocate myself and my family. How do we decide whether it’s a good move?”
  • “I’m considering ditching the corporate world to start a business. Is this goal realistic? And how do I start?”
  • “For a long time, I’ve felt that I’m in the wrong career and maybe the wrong city. I’m starting to feel I need to change — now. How do I get started exploring my options?”
  • “After ten years of stellar performance reviews, I’ve gotten a mediocre rating from a new boss. I’m trying to decide how to respond — maybe it’s time for a new job anyway.”
  • “My job search keeps stalling. Do I need a new resume? A better way to handle interviews?  Or a new field with more opportunity?”
  • “I just started a new job (after ten years in the old one). It’s puzzling, exciting, fun and also scary. I need a confidential sounding board who can help me read the culture and avoid disaster.”
  • “I got fired last week, very publicly. After twenty years in the industry, I’ve developed a high profile. I can’t just go knock on doors. Maybe I should set up my own business – but what? and how?”

Clients who enjoy working with me tend to…

  • seek down-to-earth, results-oriented options and processes
  • feel a sense of urgency — they need answers yesterday
  • have financial resources so they don’t feel pressured
  • define themselves as self-motivated achievers
  • enjoy fast-paced, energetic interactions
