Your resume

Posted by CathyG in job change, job search, resume on 07 27th, 2008OK, these days you often need only a virtual resume. But for those special times when only a paper resume will do, here’s a really good set of guidelines.
There’s just one rule I’d question. Many experts say the one-page resume is outdated. As long as you have good, solid, result-oriened content, you can certainly include another page or even two pages.
Another rule I’d add is, “Show, don’t tell.” Instead of, “Good communication skills,” you can give examples of situations where those great skills produced results and contributed to the bottom line.
How a Functional Resume Can Kill Your Career Change
Posted by CathyG in career advice, job search, resume on 05 26th, 2008Career expert Kim Isaacs makes the point graphically in her recent blog post: Functional resumes won’t work. They raise more questions than they answer.
After all, why do other-worldly career and outplacement services recommend functional resumes? Because they believe you have a problem with your past. They want to disguise the problem by, they say, focusing on your skills.
That’s like hiding an elephant under a blanket. Everybody knows something’s there…and frankly, what they guess is even worse than what’s real.
The good news: you can create a chronological resume that displays your skills equally well. Check out the template in my own irreverent job search guide.
And for midlife career changers, chances are your first contact with an employer will not be the resume. You will be networking or working with a recruiter. A resume is important, but it’s one step in your overall job search strategy.
