Job Search Strategy: Why should they hire you?

by CathyG on June 8, 2008

I just came across an article on Yahoo Careers: The Big Question: Why Should I Hire You?

Author Joe Turner argues that this interview question separates the contenders from the also-rans. That’s why managers like to ask it.

Regardless of whether you actually face this question, I think it’s good to start thinking in those terms whether you have a career or a business. It’s a variant of the classic WIIFM — What’s In It For Me — that website visitors ask every time they visit a page. It’s what we all ask when we’re presented with an advertisement or sales pitch.

I’d go further. Ask this question as you write your resume and cover letter. Anticipate this question in every part of your interview. Every question really is a search to answer the Big Question…even “Where did you go to school?”
